Mention the name Gerry Marshall in club racing circles and you are almost guaranteed the undivided attention of your listener, for Gerry is one of those characters who really makes motorsport worthwhile. He does not look like a racing driver, with his enormous girth, nor does he behave in the very correct but very dull manner so often associated with modern motorsport. In fact Gerry Marshall is best described as a throw-back to another era of the sport when men were men and not just efficient human computers following team instructions.
Whatever he does, Gerry is the centre of attraction, his outrageous behaviour, humour, outspokenness and legendary capacity for alcohol combine to ensure that no social
event with his presence will ever be forgotten. While his amazing car control, tenacity and natural showmanship provide entertainment with a capital E for thousands of racegoers
most weekends.
Gerry is best known for his participation in saloon car racing, particularly with Baby Bertha the incredible V8-engined Vauxhall Firenza prepared by DTV, which so often
made a mockery of the opposition. But he has also successfully competed in many other forms of motorsport from Formula Ford to Classic Saloon racing.
Here then is the complete story of Britain?s genial giant who has, and deserves, the sort of popularity normally reserved for F1 drivers.
